Dr Pierre Foldès

The clitoris is now known to be much larger than the external glans, a relatively small structure which is removed during many forms of female genital mutilation or FGM, and so the possibility is there for reconstruction.

Dr Foldès is the surgeon in St Germain en Laye who is one of the few who perform clitoral reconstruction after FGM. There are plenty of others who perform repairs, or reversals, but do not rebuild the clitoris. Even reversal though, is a great step forward for women who have undergone more extreme forms of FGM. One report follows up some women who have had reversals done and found them very happy with the outcome.

As mentioned in one of Papillon’s posts, Dr Foldès has trained some Burkinabe surgeons in the techniques. There is an interview of one of them published online in January by the journalist Ochieng' Ogodo. He himself has now trained 50 surgeons in Burkina Faso to do the operation and is happy to pass on his expertise to surgeons in other African countries.

Christine Aziz has interviewed two women who have been patients of Dr Foldès, one French, originally from Somalia, and one Sudanese living in London. Their accounts are similar but well worth reading. A French journalist has written a book, Victoire sur l'excision, about this "modest and profoundly humanitarian doctor".

It is evident from all these stories that his patients have nothing but praise for the doctor.

  1. My heart aches every time I read a post on your blog. I'll never understand why people mutilate the bodies of their helpless children. It's so sad!

    1. As a conservative muslim country, many people here think FGM is necessary to control libido and prevent their daughters from doing the sin of adultery even though it destroys their sex life and cause troubles with their sexual partners or husbands which reflects whether they realize it or not on their whole life not only the sexual part.

  4. There is a Doctor here in America that performs the operation through the organization "CLITORAID.COM" Her name is Dr Bowers, she studied under Dr Foldes in France.
In Paris the operation cost 3 thousand Euros! but it's covered by their insurance over there, consultation fee is 70 Euros and you have to go back in 6 weeks after surgery!
If you go through "CLITORAID.COM" They will pay for it only in America and you pay 1 thousand Dollars hospital fees.
We were wronged by our Parents and i feel very happy that we can be HELPED!
My Surgery is in Mar 2009 here in America with Dr Bowers...
Will be back to tell you all how it went...

  6. Hi.

I too am interested in having the surgery done but there is no way I can afford $1000 let alone 3000 Euros. I read some of the articles on Dr Foldes and it says that the surgery is free.

Does anyone know if it is free for those of us who live in the UK? I also need contact details for Dr Foldes so that I can find out how to go about setting up a consultation.

    sparklegirl2000@googlemail.com

    Thanks.

  9. My surgery with Dr. Bowers was WONDERFUL. I am happy, i did it biggest satisfaction is i can see my very own CLITORIS.
Office visit before the surgery, she checked me and said YES, your clitoris is still there, her work on me, is OUTSTANDING.
She worked on the labia, like magic, my vagina looks just like i never had CIRCUMCISION. I'm still healing though, healing very very well.

  10. If you chose to do it in Paris with Dr. Foldes here are his office numbers 331-39102626 or 331-3927-4248.
Cost here 3,000 euros for surgery, 70 euros office visit, good news, if you live in Paris, your insurance will cover the payment. Visitors, you pay everything.

Dr. Marci Bowers, you have to contact, this organization "clitoraid.com" send them a message and they will contact you, make all the arrangements with Dr. Bowers.
Cost here in U.S, $1,000, just payed that, so i hope it stays that cheap so everyone can afford it.

Good luck my Sisters. I'm happy i did mine and i hope you all are successful with yours too.

  12. I have just stumbled upon an article on FGM reconstruction surgery here in UK. It's about Dr Comfort Momoh of the Well Women Clinic at St. Thomas Hospital in London and has her contact details. The article is old so I don't know whether the telephone number and email address are still valid.

  17. I really want to have this operation done with Dr Foldes, but I ain't got 3'000 Euros, I've read an article stating that "he does not charge women who have been a victim of FGM" is this true? also how long does it take to fully recover from the operation? :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Dr. foldes charges the people in Paris, it's only free because their insurance pays for everything.
    His office number 331-39102626, 331-3927-4248.
Call his staff for more info. Good luck.

  19. Hi anonymous above, Dr Foldes does a check up at 6 weeks afer the operation, and another at 6 months, so I would guess you should be completely healed in 6 months at the outside, unless of course there were any complications.

  20. Hi'ya this is "Anonymous" above who was asking about the charges for the operation and how long it takes to recover,,, I would like to say thank you to "A" and "Peace" who answered my questions I'm gonna phone the office this week and I'll update you what they say... I'm nervous about all of this but I'm thinking positive...also are any of you from the UK? perhaps London? just for interested..of course you do not have to answered that question I can understand..Thank you all :)

Hi'ya this is "Anonymous who was asking about if any of you from the UK, London" thanks to those who answered my question..well I have spokent to Dr Foldes on Monday this week he was really nice he could tell how nervouse I was speaking to him but then I'm always nervouse about everthing and anything! lol...:)he said what I need to do is to call the office and book a consultation first I asked about the cost and he said he does not charge for his work BUT the hospital charged for the administration and consultation which is £2'000 pound.. i thought that is not too bad,,,
My plan is now to go for the operation early next year because I'm going back to work and also I have one child who is 2 years old.
Again just for interest I would like to find know where some of you are from "orginally" I'm guessing most of us who have been through FGM are from Africa..I'm willing to tell you all that I'm Orginally from Somalia and I've lived in the UK for over 17 Years I left somalia when I was 5 years old and I'm hoping some of you would share some information about yourselfs,,, But I do respect that if you don't want share that information..I also would like to say that this is nothing to be ashame about because we were all young children when this FGM has happened..I believe what don't kill you makes you stronger!! keep smilling and take care xxx :)

  25. Hi London thought id shoud share that i also have been considering this operation.Although i orginally considered to have it in france i am also considering the sugery offerd in america (trindad colarado near denver). i got incontact with clitoriad and for those who wish to know the details considring the op i have taken the liberty of posting the infromtion sent to me (they were extreamly nice)
"Clitoraid would schedule an appointment for you at Dr. Bowers' clinic in Trinidad Colorado. Dr. Bowers would give you a pre-op medical visit one day before your surgery. The next day, you would be scheduled for your surgery to restore your clitoris. (the surgery lasts about 30 minutes). It is advised that the patients limit their walking for 3 days to one week following their surgery. There are very reasonable hotels in the town of Trinidad.
A month later, we would schedule your post-op medical visit with Dr. Bowers.
The cost of the procedure is very reasonable since Dr. Bowers does not charge for her services and neither does her anesthesist The medical cost is $2,400 in addition to your travel and hotel costs during your recovery."
Hope that was helpful im trying to work out which would be cheaper as $2400 is only around £1600 however it doesnt include hotel and flight so im not sure yet. good luck with it all and ..i was born in ethipoia but am of eritrean decent so i assume i was circumsied there (only discovered recently i was excsiced and have not come to discussing it with family therefore dont no the details i persume it was at early birth as i have lived in london for most of my life.

  33. I live in London. I was a Somali national but ethnicity is arab. I was 9 at the time and the memory is still so vivid 18years later. The good news though is that I have finally managed to save up the required amount for the surgery by cutting out all luxury spending as I like to call it. I have 3 weeks of holiday time that I still have to use up at work so that is sorted. All I have to do is ring and set up a consultation.

I finally have the means to make my dream come true after years of wishing for a miracle (or in my more fantastical imagining of a way to turn back time and not walk through that door on that particular day) so why am I so nervous about picking up the phone and actually making the call to Dr Foldes's clinic? Anyone have that problem?

  49. hi ...
Today I met with Dr Foldes, very nice man.
you have 2 choice whether you do the operation in the clinic or hospital.
if you go in the clinic doing something cost of 2,500 euros and in the hospital when you are doing your cost 5000 euros so I opted for the klieniek.
I was there I opted to have surgery and I got a letter from the registration it has cost me something like 23 euros and then when you've had conversation with the doctor, you pay a sum of 50 euros.
If you are well insured you get the insurance paid. that I have to see how that goes. I will have surgery soon and he said do not just you but your lips clitoris is also recovery. I would say go for it and I let you know how afloopt.Thnx N.

Nice to here all these good news. Does anyone knows how to get to the Dr Foldes clinic from the airport. I have an appointment with him next month but unfortunately her secretary speaks little english hence she was not able to give me the address or anymore information apart from appointment date and time. I do not know where to start or end and I desparately want to attend this appointment coming from UK. Any information will be appreciated please.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Which airport is that? Charles de Gaulle? If so, you get the RER train line B into Paris and the RER line A to St Germain en Laye. The RER is similar to the metro but you need to watch that you take the train going to St Germain and not one of the brancehes.

The Paris by Train site should help, and there's a route planner too. Both in English.

    ReplyDelete
  56. And the airport is often called Aeroport de Roissy. You'd need to allow a good hour for the journey, probably longer in case you miss the connection in Paris.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks for the reply but which is the easiest means of transport for getting to the clinic from London since I have never been to france before and I am worried of getting lost and I do not speak french at all

  58. Have you thought of getting the Eurostar train from London? That would take you straight to the heart of Paris and then if you are well prepared with maps it shouldn't be too bad. Just give yourself loads and loads of time so that you aren't rushing.

  66. I am a Kenyan woman and had my clitoral reconstruction surgery with dr bowers in Trinidad Co in July 2010. We were six African women. I will tell you my outcomes in due course. Just know that it takes time to heal...it is not that minor an operation. I speak as a mother who has gone through a ceasarian section. It is worthy it I believe to get my Clitoris back. Contact me at: phillipa.mk@gmail.com. I am still healing today. I plan to campaign to get Drs at the Nairobi Women's hospital to offer this operation. Clitoraid has built a hospital at Bukina Faso and Dr Bowers will be going there next January to offer some operations. Contact the clitoraid officer for Africa at www.clitoraid.corg.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I will give you feedback about the after effect of the operation. I hope that the difference will be for the better as the clitoris is supposed to be pulled out, hence increasing the sensations. When I heal and get feelings as per my expectations, I will share with you. I agree that getting the operation is imperative but the outcome must be satisfactory too.

    Patience my sisters!!

  68. Actually when I read Papillon's blog early this year, I was disappointed in the end because she never detailed her satisfaction or disappointment with her operation: whether it was cosmetic or not. Whether there was sensation in her clitoris after the operation or not.

  70. I returned here because of this blog: http://www.senediaspora.com/sante-psychologie-sexualite-f16/vos-remarques-apres-l-intervention-du-dr-foldes-t1868.htm

Many women in that blog do not seem to be happy with the outcome. Let me heal and I will share the truth with you. So far I do not see it looking like that of an uncut woman. That is what we all want, dont we? I believe that these good Drs, Foldes and Bowers need to work together with plastic surgeons so that the outcome may look and feel as real as possible. I am writing a book to detail my experiences and make proposals as to what can be done in future to make this a successful endevour. We are guinea pigs.....I am an older woman in my fifties.....but younger dating women need to look like their peers. That is what we will be advocating for. Also, we need mor African doctors to be involved. There are quite a number in West Africa and none in East Africa.

  71. I have appointment to get this surgery done in few months. Can someone please let me know how their experience with the surgery went. How was your healing time? Were you satisfied with the end result? Are you able to orgasm or have great pleasure? I would love to hear from you girls. Thank you.

  72. The operation with Dr Bowers alters the shape and appearance of the vulva in a way that I do not find attractive. Many of the women who have ahd the surgery claim that the clitorii retracted, leaving only scars. Mine too......there is nothing but a scar. Maybe the sensitivity will return after a while, but I tell you, if I had to chose between spending all that money on the surgery, the trip, the pain of deep cuts to locate the clitoris, then have it retract; the despair and disappointment, I would never have done it. I used to get pleasure because parts of my vulva....the hood was intact.....but the operation by Dr B made not attempt to save that part. She cut right through it, knowing fully that she could not replace it. Now frankly, I cannot tell what I have become!!! Sisters, I suggest you be careful about going for surgery with Clitoraid.........go to a plastic surgeon instead because they help you to reconstruct what you have, not cut your remaining parts and try to put them together. The result is an ugly looking vulva. If I had known that this is what awaited me, I would have gone to a plastic surgeon to fix my inner labia and leave me the way I was. Now I tell you sisters, I feel damaged. This clitoral construction is a risk which one must take care before going for it. Perhaps Clitoraid will improve their techniques as I have demanded of them. Otherwise there will be many disappointed women out there. If you can get an orgasm, get a plastic surgeon to improve the look of your vulva intead of the deep cutting of the Clitoraid procedure. This procedure cuts even more than circumcision does and no one knows the impact of such a cut on child birth. It will have to be ceasarian because the scars will not allow the birth canal to open as expected during child birth.
I will always tell you the truth. Maybe the lady above did get the inner labia and clitoris during her surgery with Dr B but in our group of 6, perhaps one got that as she was the only person who was pleased.........the rest of us were cut deeply, then Dr B stitched us back without any grafting, seriouly altering the vulva, no inner labia, no clitoris. I suggest you do not go for Clitoraid surgeries until we are sure that they have improved their techniques......by correcting what they did to us and I will let you know when they have done so. Otherwise many of you will lose more than than they will gain from the surgery with Clitoraid.

  73. That is very true even in France you get the same result which is very frustrating after paying all that money and being promised that they will reconstruct your labia minora and critories. After operation the end result is very depressing and I also think it is a high time for them to tell people the truth that the result is not as expected unless they are going to carryout plastic surgery. I would like to hear from anyone who has had the operation who have her critories reconstructed and is visible please because with this operation yuo are just left with scars.

    1. Ladies,

I had this surgery in March 2010 with Dr Foldes, AS soon as I read about it online, I was lucky to have some money and book my appointment to have the surgery.
I was told it all went well, went back for my 6 weeks check up and all still positive, I was given a scaring cream to apply on it for faster healing, I healed, saw a pick area for a while and almost 6 months after the surgery, there was nothing...It was as if it had never happened and there is no clit! I have never returned to Dr foldes for 6 months consultation because of the psychological damage, I am very happy that I tried to put it wright but failure to have anything different is still very hearbraking..I thought about trying again because of my sexuality but helas, it is someone I feel that I cannot change and i feel like it is the worse punishment ever!
Good luck and i am very happy for you if yours have worked but please do let other women know so that they can make an informed decision

  83. Hi All! please can someone else give their perspective about this kind of surgery because Dr. Pierre and Bowers are getting a lot of praise about this. If the results are not good then it would just be better to have other people know so they do not try it. Thank you girls

I heard about this blog today and you can be sure my day has been long with smiles all over me. I am an African and had this when i was only 10 years. i am so afraid to be in any relationship coz im afraid if men saw what was done down there. At times the scar is too sensitive and painful.... making me uncomfortabl. My life was at an end coz what was left was only waorking to get my daily bread and wait to die. i did not think of even relationships. Thanks sooo much to Dr FOLDES and the rest who have made these girls smile. please share keep sharing more and tgose who have had the restoration please let us know the results EITHER GOOD OR BAD. I wish we could even get to see photos of BEFORE ND AFTER the restoration. smiles all over me. call me Kenya

  88. I am just so shocked that many more women who had this surgery are not sharing their experiences. I wanted this surgery so bad just so I can see my clit. I can orgasm just fine by rubbing the area where my clit was supposed to be. But holy crap! I would be devestated if this surgery took that away from me. ok ladies, I know most of us where thought to be ashamed of our beautiful bodies but we don't have to accept that crap! So C'MON and share your experiences. we want to hear if you like it, hate it or whatever else. DON'T BE SILENT!!!! :)

  91. Hey girls.

I am 25 years old, originally from Eritrea. I've lived in the UK the last 6 years. Like most eritrean women around my age n older I underwent FGM when i was only a baby. I realized that I went through the process when i was 16, after a presentation given at school about Circumcision. I went home running that day to ask my mother if i was one of the cultural victims. She smiled n said nothing. I was really upset. Anyways I forgot everything about cos at that time, i didn't have any problems with it ...physically/emotionally. You know if something happens when u were a baby...hard to remember. When i was 24, last year, i met someone...we got on really well. He was asking to make love to me, but i was always making excuses...cos i knew exactly what's gonna happen...how painful it's gonna be....bleeding. All that thought made me push him away from me when ever we are about to have sex. But one day, I don't call it a rape but he forced me n the next minute, all i can remember is me screaming n blood running through my thighs.....the worst day of my life. I wasn't able to walk...urinate...or...just pain, crying. Two days later i went to a walk-in clinic. All they did was gave me some pain killers n advised me to drink more water to protect infection as i told them that i avoided taking in any fluid to avoid urinating. I can't really find words to expain how painful it was for weeks. My BF didn't even have the sympathy to understand my situation so i broke up with him. Two weeks gone, I went to see my GP n got refered to a hospital...seen by a nurse and i am awaiting to have the surgery. But now i am really confused...cos the surgery they do in the UK is different from the one with Dr.Foldes in France. If I am not wrong (I have done little research on it), depending on the type of FGM, the surgery in the UK could widen the space to prepare a women for sexual intercourse and during giving birth, but can't give you ur clitoris back...which means that ur sexual pleasure will still be the same eventhough the pain is reduced due to a wider opening. My surgery has been already booked....i was really excited at first, but now that i heard about the surgery in france....can't make my mind up. Please Help. I would definetly go for it if it really works.

    1. You are right, the UK surgery is different but sometimes it's enough. I don't know why, but nobody ever comes back after seeing Dr Foldes. I wish I could help you more.

  96. Hi payment,

    My name is BB

I Found out about the surgery about 4days now, I was so happy I thought I've hit the jackpot! I thought I can finally take control over my life and finally be happy with myself, I can't afford it but I was willing to do anything to get the money to fund it, I hate looking down there, hate feeling angry and crying all the time!
I too was thinking of getting the surgery done this summer holiday but I've read a lot of negative comment now I'm not too sure if I want to do it because I don't want to go through that emotional and psychological pain again! I'm back agin feeling helpless and know that I will just be like a sex toy to any man and never truly know what it feels like to acc enjoy sex which is my God given right!

Anyways I live in London so can you please tell me how it went, how much was the total payment, how long was the operation, did it hurt, did u get the clit and minora done and can u enjoy sex or does it feel any different, basically can u tell me everything if u can?

And also I can't reach Dr forde can you send me his contact plz
