PhotoHunter: old fashioned

I was fairly clear in my mind what I was going to use today, and I knew where to find the photographs. What I hadn't realised was that they were wrapped in some old newspaper from 1942 and in the newspaper were these two old fashioned advertisements.

1942 newspaper ad

Please note, it was during the war and the above advertisement is for American satin! Such luxury! It isn't only the subject matter that's old fashioned, but the style too.

They are so completely unlike anything we have nowadays.

Then we come to the photos I was intending to show you, the first of my parents' wedding day in 1942, just after my father qualified. Immediately afterwards he went out to North Africa in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

The second shows my mother and a friend in my parents' flat, not long after that wedding. I am particularly delighted with this one because I still have the photo of my father that you can see on the mantelpiece and and my sister has the copper coal scuttle to the left of the picture.

So not only can you see old fashioned clothes, but also an old fashioned interior décor. The question is, when do old fashioned things become period items of some value?

  5. "Period" pieces are generally worth a little bit of money once they hit about 50 yo - depending on what the current trend is. Once they get to 80 yo, it gets better. 100 and it is considered antique.

  37. Hi a. --

You've got some wonderful photos up for this week's hunt. A question: What's (a) Blood Purifier??? As to my attempt at an answer to your question: I guess it's when they (a) become rare and/or (b) treasured memories get attached to them.

  38. Can you believe it, it's not that far away since.

  41. Sold a 1930's house 8 yrs ago and since seeing it advertised for sale have been alternatively crying or muttering "how much?".
All period features had been removed, leaving behind a half-finished loft-style shell.
The fire-place in your photo was very similar to ours. Sure not as cute as victorian, but hey!
Current neighbours have ripped out an ornate plaster ceiling to replace it with plasterboard & halogen spots. My philosophy is if you want modern then buy or build new, don't destroy buildings whose soul remains behind once you have left, but as they say, there's nowt so strange as folk. Or, just maybe, it's me that's strange.

  43. Thank you everyone for your comments :)
YSTL, I have absolutely no idea what Blood Purifier is, nor would I care to try it if I came across any. My guess is that either it had no active ingredients, or was positively dangerous. :)
Anonymous 28/01 I couldn't agree more. I sometimes have this fanciful thought that we don't really own houses, but are their guardians for future generations. And maybe I'm strange too :)
