Earth Hour 2008

I've post-dated this so that it will stay on top for the next two weeks. For newer posts including Photo Hunt, scroll down.

On 29 March 2008, at 8:00 pm, wherever you are in the world, turn off all lights for one hour.

Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.

  1. I guess I'll be sleeping then.
8 p.m. in the US, no?
    Early morning here.
Or maybe hubby has to take a shower and get dressed for work in the dark ;)

    But a good idea nonetheless!
If only everyone in the US would do it, it would probably already be a big message!

  2. Hi Nicole, no it's 8:00 pm wherever you are - I'm in the UK. It started started with initiatives in Australia, in Sydney, in an effort to combat light pollution, and grew from there to emphasise the waste of energy and need to greenhouse gas emissions.

  3. That's a really neat idea, I'll have to spread the word. I wonder how much energy that actually saves?

  4. How do you post date an article?

  5. Hi Erin, I don't know how much it saves, though I think I read something about it. I'll have to do a bit of digging.

Rick, in Blogger you go into Post Options (link bottom left of the post) and choose whatever date you want. In Wordpress there is a Post Timestamp section at the bottom right where you can set what you want.

  6. awesome idea!! will definitely do it!!!

Do check out my blog and leave a comment too!!

  7. I've heard about it and I think last year there was a message token in mobile phone text message going on last year. Thanks for reminding - its for a good course!

  8. I most certain will do:
I'll fight the deforestation, the lack of fresh water for 50% of living life on this small planet and stop the uncontrolled release of Metan gaz.
Did you know: 1 kg (2lbs) og red meat, need at least 7 kg (15 lbs) to be produced. What land does it take to produce?

  9. Thanks shravan, Renny and Tor - the more who do it, the better the sign. I didn't know about the text message last year renny.

  10. I did my bit yesterday - we had a power cut for over an hour and of course it was pitch black. Thank God for battery powered Macs.

  11. This is a nice action! Hopping the governements will take act and do their best to protect our planet.

  12. Time to kill the computer by then.

  13. thanks for the info... rick, i got the same question as you.. but answered clearly...

maybe, i should go out from the house for a dinner, switching off everything..

  14. A little early Caledonia :)
Claudie, Wangbu and Ashwina, thanks. Yes I think if you're going to enter into the full spirit of it, the computer should be switched off too. I think though the main aim is for the lights to be seen to go off round the world. I have an idea that last year it could be seen from space. I'm not sure if I'm right about that though.

  15. nice info, i'll spread around here =D

Forethoughts, afterthoughts, any thoughts. Tell me.
