Spam-a-lot ..... the interval

Comment moderation has been added again.  I'm sorry to my regular and faithful visitors, but yesterday felt like a near disaster as a certain Chinese person attempted to leave his mark all over my blog.  All in Chinese, so incomprehensible to us but I think the idea was for his huge lists of links to be followed by Google's spiders.  At the moment I know of no other way to combat spam, so I'll leave it in place for a while.

  1. I understand. There have been too many spammers, I put in verifications for comments.

  2. Oh, A. how awful for you. You feel so helpless in the face of such an invasion. I have had an occasional visit from some S American bloke who wants me to provide a link to his blog and mention him on mine. Sorry, but no chance.

    Good luck.

  3. I know its a pain A but its the best way. I get surprising little touch wood.

  4. I think that same person got to me, too! With about a hundred different links, all in Chinese. I added comment moderation for any posts over 2 days old, since I always check my recent posts for comments. I have found that lots of spam tries to get posted on older entries.

  5. @ECL, I suppose that does slow them up, I could give it a try.

@Elaine, it wasn't good at all. He left hundreds, and now I'm going to have to trawl through and make sure I haven't left any undeleted. The occasional one can be deleted easily enough, yesterday it was hundreds. I rather wish I hadn't been so talkative in the past. :)

@Mike, it's looking like it. Sad.

just wanted to encourage you to keep your dreams alive! :)

  7. @Daisy, sorry I missed your comment earlier. It must have been in moderation while I was replying! :) You're right about spam usually being on older posts, so I'll probably give that a try. A feasible half-way house perhaps.

@Debbie, many thanks. I'm certainly chasing those bubbles. :)

  8. Sorry for your unwelcome visitor. They make it difficult for all of us.

  9. I suppose it is done by computer, as opposed to some spotty adolescent sitting in his little box typing all day.
    Annoying all the same.

  10. It's a sign of the popularity of your blog. A quiet blog doesn't get attacked so much.

  11. Max, they do. How to win friends.

@Adullamite, I think you may well be right. I could see from my stats he/she/it was working its way methodically through the posts.

@Solomon, thank you for making me feel better! A positive outlook is always great!

  12. I have zero tolerance for spammers, thank goodness I have a decent plugin on my blog and not many get through, grrr.

  13. A. Spammers are getting on my nerve everyday. I have to go through some hundreds of comment on some day so as not to miss out the legitimate one. The thing is, I have spam program in place and these spammers can still get through somehow. I can't imagine what will happen if I do not put the spam program in place.

  14. I guess that is the good thing about having fewer than 20 comments. I can weed mine out fairly easily. I have been very lucky so far although the chinese one did get me also. I deleted it and have had no more. Hang in there!

  15. Ouch. I hate them. Though I only get a couple a day since I installed the "Bad Behavior" plugin for my Wordpress. I'm so lucky - it works like a charm :-)

Hope you get rid off them. Even though I hate it myself: I think you'll get less spam with the word verification, thing on, since automatic spammers can't manage to get through that one as easy.

  17. I got hit not too long ago, robot spammer left over a thousand comments on one post.

  18. Spam is one thing, insults another. Just this past week, I checked my website and found a misogynist post that appeared to have come totally out of the blue (and on an innocuous entry about typhoons to boot!). :S

  19. A. I am very very sorry. Pardon me, I had approved your comment which ended up in the spam box and had even replied to your comment. But when I deleted all the other spam comment, your comment was somehow deleted also. It's frustrating that a spam program put to work not only remove the spam but also legitimate comment. Very sorry for it. But I had read and replied to your comment.

  20. A. nothing to apologize for; it's better to keep the blog clean as spam is increasing and you can search over Google foe this stuff.

I myself is suffring from this stuff even if the moderation is enabled but better than nothing.

  21. I love these pictures. The cathedral is so massive. And you must be really fit to have climbed all those stairs!

I will try to stop spamming you. :)

  22. Thanks to all of you for your support. I do appreciate it.

YTSL, that sounds horrible. I wouldn't like to have to deal with that.

BK, don't worry at all about that. It wasn't such a great insight. :)

And Max, friends are never spammers. :)
