Fish, fowl or good red herring?

What is it?

The answer is, the feathers on the back of a peacock.

A beautiful, and very tame, peacock posing with intent.  Found at Valençay. I couldn't decide whether he was illustrating the menu (which course I wonder?) or just hopeful.

  1. Oh, I was right! (For once, lol)

Peacocks are wonderful. We had one getting in the way on a small road in Scotland once and it refused to move. We were stuck for quite a while admiring it :-)

  2. Unfortunately my French is rubbish and anyway I may have got the wrong end of the stick, but is our beautiful feathered friend on the menu?

  4. Couldn't fool anyone! I think they are beautiful birds and this one was apparently used to begging for food at the tables outside the restaurant.

I don't think he was on the menu, Mike, but it was written sufficiently vaguely that actually it could have been. It appealed to my sense of humour to see him posing by the board.

They taste good, do they Sage? I know they used to be banquet fare once upon a time. This one was probably tough as old boots.

  5. I didn't even come close. You stumped at least one of us. :)

Is "snacking" French? I was just thinking they might get in trouble with the language police I've heard so much about. The peacock (I can tell it's not a peahen) looks like he's just read the menu and is moving on.

    What an interesting photo!

  6. I don't think the language police would come after a small restaurant in a small town in deepest, darkest France, but anyway, they don't have legal powers. They have some advantages though because - or so I'm told - they have prevented major changes in the language for so long that it really isn't as difficult to understand a book written hundreds of years ago as it is in English. I'm not entirely convinced, after ploughing through one or two classics.

"Snacking" reminds me of when one of my sons went on a training course and first thing every morning there was "footing". I thought it an odd time to have football, especially since they were a swimming team. It turned out to be jogging.

  8. Haven't seen a peacock in years! Used to live in San Diego and travel to the Zoo quite often - where, of course, they have a huge display. Beautiful birds!
