PhotoHunt: tied

All these beds, two from Fontainebleau and two from Valençay, have hangings which are tied in place.

A bedchamber at Fontainebleau.

This is Napoleon's bed, also at Fontainebleau, my favourite I think.

Another with green hangings, but this time in the less elaborate surroundings of the Château at Valençay.

King Ferdinand's bedroom at Valençay.

While I was preparing this post, I found myself wanting to know more about the history of beds.  I had no idea that there were quite so many differences, how they evolved over time, and why.

  4. The first two beds look like four poster beds but the last two look more like sofa chairs than beds from the angles I see them!

  5. Thanks everyone!

@YTSL, the two you mention were the only type in the whole château. I was quite surprised to see in every case, the long side was against the wall, even in rooms that were very definitely bedrooms. There was a bed in Napoleon's office at Fontainebleau, very similar to the second two, but they did say on the blurb that he used it as a bed if he needed a nap during the day! When the going got tough. :)
