Before the snow

... which is still with us, by the way, I decided to go in search of a cup of coffee on the pier.  I made the decision when the sun was shining but that didn't last too long.  The pier is long but the call of home-made cakes is strong so I set off at a goodly pace along the beach even though the sun was rapidly disappearing.

There was plenty of interest to see along the way: rough seas (slightly), fireworks (one previous owner), a lightbulb (undamaged), but on the whole it was a day of shells.  I notice the beach yields its treasures in types.  One day it's dead sea-birds, the next cuttlefish, and this time shells.

An hour later I arrived at the pier but by now it was lunchtime so I decided against coffee.  I spied a minor crowd admiring a bus so I had to go and look too, and not to seem disinterested I took photos too.

In the end though, it was just a blue bus a long way from home, just like I was.

It took only 10 minutes to get back.

Adding (a glimpse of me)

I thought I would return to photo hunting in the new year of 2013 - but not this week.  I didn't think I had anything to fit the themes.  I never include myself in photos but then I came across some that included a glimpse.

Some gardens and parks add art, presumably to enhance the view. Sometimes they do, and this sculpture I thought did fit in fairly well, at the Salutation Gardens.

At times I'm guilty myself of trying to enhance nature and this sunset is one example of using an added boost of colour.  The original must have been good enough for me to have taken the picture but when I viewed it on the computer I did think it needed an extra something.

I am also guilty of adding a little glimpse of myself, most frequently shadow.  I can't think what I thought this would show but my excuse is that it was the hottest day of summer, the one hot day of last summer (25 July) and it must have gone to my head.

On that same day I managed to produce what used to be a common occurrence, the finger across the lens.  It's almost impossible with my own camera but I must have decided to take my husband's camera that day.  It was a long walk in the sun and a smaller camera seemed sensible.

In spite of all the artificial additions, I really prefer nature's own.  As far as I'm concerned, these wild flowers added more interest than any shadow or finger of mine.

A two-in-one post for the Photo Hunts.

After the storm

We've had some terrible weather over the last day or two - heavy rain and gale force winds.  It has eased for the moment, but we're being threatened with a return soon.  I'm only glad we're not attempting to cross the Channel.  The Eurotunnel option is looking more and more attractive.

Photohunt: orange

The Roman theatre in Orange, in the south of France (Provence).  I have to say that there is not a lot to Orange, the town, apart from this and the Triumphal Arch, but that same evening we were treated to an orange sky over Orange.

Twenty minutes from the town of Orange, I took this picture from a hilltop village.

"He hangs in shades the orange bright Like golden lamps in a green night." ~ Andrew Marvell

"The majority of (painters), because they aren't colourists, do not see yellow, orange or sulphur in the South (of France) and they call a painter mad if he sees with eyes other than theirs." ~ Vincent van Gogh.

PhotoHunt: low

We've had a great deal of low pressure this summer, resulting in low cloud.  Mainly accompanied by rain....

But when low cloud is accompanied by a low sun, sometimes the result is delight.

Changeable

sky at dusk
A brief glimpse of blue sky before the sun set and before the next band of rain came over. Changeable weather, changeable times.

A misty moisty morning

misty dawn sky
This morning just after dawn, as the mists lingered in the valley over the river. We've had a few mornings like this recently but the mist has never before cleared enough for me to catch the shot.

A new day dawning

This morning I was awake early and watched the new day dawning as I sat on the veranda with my first cup of tea of the day.

The sun started to light up the neighbouring houses...

.... and the tree next door

PhotoHunter: clouds

Well if you want clouds, I can most certainly give you clouds.

Today we have cloud, horizon to horizon. And steady, drizzly rain with it.

It would be far preferable if the clouds were more dramatic.

But better still, white fluffy clouds on a summer's day, overlooking the valley while enjoying a leisurely lunch.

Best of all, almost no cloud, and by the sea.

Red sky in the morning

We had a spectacular sunrise when I should have been getting ready for work.

It did start off looking quite ominous, and as I've said before,

Red sky at night, shepherd's delight
Red sky at morning, shepherd's warning.

However it didn't really come to anything other than a sudden drop in temperature.

Well it was pinkish, so probably a reasonable day tomorrow. (The real forecast is good too!)
